At Medical Teams International (MTI), we dare to love like Jesus by boldly breaking barriers to health and restoring wholeness in a hurting world. Through delivering life-saving medical care to people in crisis, we hope to show our most vulnerable neighbors that they are loved and valued—by God and by us.

Since Russian forces launched their first attack on February 24, 2022, more than 5 million refugees have fled Ukraine and entered Poland, Hungary, Romania, Moldova, and other neighboring countries. This crisis is now the largest movement of people in Europe since World War 2. Many Ukrainians are in urgent need of medical care and medicine. There is also a growing need for mental health services as people cope with witnessing traumatic events and being forced from their homes.

Currently, Medical Teams is on the ground in Moldova providing medical care for Ukrainian refugees. Our teams of volunteer doctors and nurses are helping deliver urgent medical care to refugees at border crossings in Moldova. They are also training border police and other frontline staff on trauma and psychological first aid, so they have the skills needed to receive new refugees.

Additionally, we are training a team of local volunteers to provide psychological first aid and mental health support.

Story

Evghenii works as a border patrol officer in Moldova. He and his fellow officers receive Ukrainian refugees as they first cross the border into Moldova. After fleeing violence and leaving their homes behind, these refugees have many questions about where they should go and what they should do next. Some officers have reported refugees experiencing panic attacks from the anxiety of leaving their home and family members.

To address these needs, Evghenii requested psychological first aid training for the border patrol officers, which Medical Teams facilitated. “Most refugees coming across the border need mental health support because they are stressed and traumatized,” Evghenii said. “This is an important training for the officers so they can provide mental and emotional support to refugees.”
