Cornerstone Counseling  provides Christian mental health care to develop greater wholeness and healing for missionaries and their families serving throughout Asia and the local Thai community. We care for these individuals through clinical counseling, trainings, and workshops.

In 2021, 20% of our clients were under the age of 18 and included missionary kids and Thai children. These young clients shared their struggles with anxiety, depression, dealing with their parents’ stress, suicidal thoughts, and trauma, especially with the pandemic’s impact. Children and parents are asking for help to cope with mental health needs.

Children are best helped by a holistic approach that provides care individually within community, with support to improve their parents’ or caregivers’ skills. Our project will address 3 major needs: 1) Direct counseling services for children and families; 2) Training for parents and caregivers who work with children; and 3) Support for the children’s camp focused on healing from trauma.

Story

Amber (8 y/o) and her family needed to evacuate from Myanmar to Thailand in early 2021 as violence erupted in their neighborhood with government crackdowns. She and her younger brother worked with a counselor for 8 months on the trauma they witnessed. Other counselors worked with their parents who were not coping or parenting well as a result. A year later, Amber has learned through play therapy how to soothe her anxiety with the help of her parents, who are better able to provide a more secure home environment.
